What is a weekly photo challenge?
A photo challenge is when a theme or topic is set and your goal is to photograph it in the most creative way. It’s a great way to develop your photographic ability style, especially for newer photographers.
Challenges can be very specific such as, “beach sunset” or completely open to interpretation as the colour “blue”. There is no right or wrong when picking a topic.
The frequency at which the challenges are set can differ. Daily, weekly or monthly, with weekly being the perfect balance of minimising the pressure of try to photograph everyday and not enough.
Usually you are expected to post your photos online , but of course this is optional.
What are the benefits of doing a photo challenge?
The main benefit of doing a photo challenge especially one that you are required to take a photo every week is that you get to use your camera regularly. When you use your camera more often it will become second nature to adjust your settings and thinking for creativity.
A photo challenge is perfect for beginners to intermediate photographers, as it pushes them to take more photos on a regular basis.
The more you use your camera the more you you become comfortable with it and as a result your photos will improve.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need an expensive camera to do the weekly challenge?
No, you can simply use your smartphone to complete these challenges.
If you do want to improve as a photographer.
A camera in Auto mode will only take you so far.
Once you become comfortable in your ability and want to take more control of your camera. I recommend you move up to Micro Four Thirds or a digital SLR to take you photography up a level.
What happens if I miss a week or I can’t keep up?
Don’t worry about if you miss a week 🙂
Just continue where you last left off and go at your own pace. It’s important that you enjoy the whole process otherwise you will stop.
As a suggestion I think you should do it with a friend and that way you can both motivate each other to keep going.
What I like is when I received the email, Give myself a couple of days to think about the challenge and up to five days to photograph the weeks theme.
This will give you time to plan and take your photos more efficiently, but also getting better results because you are thinking about what you want to photograph rather than trying to do it all in one day.
Do I have to share my photos?
No, not at all. But it’s a good way to start improving and see what other photographers are coming up with.
If you prefer not to share on social media. You could always do the challenge with a friend and share the photos with them.
